Groove Me Baby

Finding the perfect paper has been an adventure, that ended with the same paper I started with. There is nothing like cotton paper. It behaves a little like fabric. It`s temperamental and moody. I love it!

So I decided to play with the Crane`s. This magnificent paper is not only a staple of any letterpress cabinet, but part of the history of printing itself. So I decided to observe how it behaved with different pressures and inks.

I am partial to any paper weighting 220 or more as it grooves and presses better than any other paper weight. The tooth is flat enough to absorb ink but rough enough to give the piece character.

This sample is 110 lbs. on perfect white paper. If you start from the top, I used the most pressure versus the bottom one, where I only pressed it hard enough to ink the first layer. As pretty as that is nothing beats this.
The Pillow Effect
I love this. There are Photoshop filters that try to reproduce this effect. 220 lbs. paper indents and groves just right with just a little pressure. It`s one of its best qualities, but also makes it temperamental. If anything touches it, it will react to it. It also picks up dirt like nobody`s business! Swifers should be made out of it!

Here you can see a little better the differences between paper thickness a bit better. Though 220 is pricier, to me is so worth it. Enjoy!!

A Sunny Place to Be

In case you haven`t heard, The northeast US is blanketed with snow. From New Jersey to DC, it`s covered with the white stuff. This morning I received a weather update-18 more inches. Yet the sun is out and shining at my studio.

I am just loving my new home. But my studio has become a special place. It`s business, and atelier. It`s a press room and library. It`s a knitting room and a sewing room. It`s heaven, and it`s mine.

It`s not done, as I plan to add more artwork to the walls and the french doors are not in yet and I will update.

A New Appreciation

This week has been... Crazy. Shayne has been home with a bad ankle and moody to top it off. Mine is better and I have been out and about. Shopping. The new house really needs a touch. My touch.

When I was younger, I hated going to Lowe`s, or  any home improvement store. My dad is a carpenter and we would often accompany him to get his materials. I hated it! Did I mention I hated it? I actually know how to use power tools too... Thanks dad!!

Now with the house and my new studio, I have ideas. Building ideas. Ideas that require a visit to none other than Lowe`s. Thanks to my dad, I know how to pick and buy lumber, as well as all the materials necessary to build what my mind is concocting!
I find it a bit of an oxymoron that a frilly girl like me can do this. My husband thinks it`s a plus!

So does my studio. I only have one corner remotely decent for me to take a picture. It`s sad really.

But what you are really seeing is this.

I know. It`s bad. I am not done painting and everything is everywhere. But my dad made it for me and I even have space behind it. It is pretty neat! Thanks dad!!! Thanks Lowes!

P.S. I promise I will update these pic with the finishes/intended/organized look.
